Roy Hodgson hopes that England's 5-0 defeat of Moldova on Friday will give them "some confidence" for their clash with Ukraine on Tuesday.

England coach Roy Hodgson is hopeful that his side's comprehensive defeat of Moldova on Friday will give them "some confidence" for their clash with Ukraine next week.

The Three Lions won 5-0 in Chisinau in their opening Group H game of the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign, and will welcome Ukraine at Wembley for their second match on Tuesday.

"It was a great result, great start for us, many good performances, especially the whole team's performance in the first half," Hodgson told Sky Sports News.

"I think we have come away from a potentially very difficult game with a comfortable victory and hopefully that will give us some confidence before the game on Tuesday."

Hodgson also hopes that taking off key players during the game in Moldova and giving them some rest will give them an advantage for Tuesday's clash.

"We made three changes and had the chance to rest a few players," said the 65-year-old.

"Hopefully that will do us some good by the time we play Ukraine, who are of course one of the favourites in the group, like ourselves, so we face a tough task."

In the other Group H fixture on Friday, Montenegro were held to a 2-2 draw with Poland at home.
