England international Ryan Shawcross receives praise from coach Gary Neville for moving away from Manchester United for the good of his career.

England coach Gary Neville believes that Ryan Shawcross has been a shining light to any aspiring young footballers.

Shawcross and Neville spent part of their playing careers together at Manchester United.

However, 25-year-old Shawcross was forced to leave Old Trafford for Stoke City in 2007 in order to gain regular starting action.

Having impressed over the past few seasons for the Potters, the centre-back has now found himself in the England squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland.

Discussing Shawcross's inclusion, Neville feels that his former teammate is fully deserving of a position in the squad.

"He is a great story and the fact he is in the England squad this week is something I am proud of," said Neville.

"I remember playing with him when he was 16. He was a raw talent but someone who really wanted to make it. He wanted to use the last ounce of his energy to become a professional footballer.

"He had to leave Manchester United to get his chance. Not giving in and continuing to fight is a huge strength and he has been absolutely fantastic for Stoke."

Shawcross was previously included in an England squad back in February 2010 for a friendly against Egypt.
