Gary Cahill would prefer homegrown manager to become next England boss

Gary Cahill says that he would prefer the Football Association to appoint a homegrown coach as England manager.

Gary Cahill has claimed that he would prefer the Football Association to hire a homegrown coach as the next England manager.

Sam Allardyce lasted just 67 days in charge of the Three Lions after getting caught in a media sting by The Telegraph.

England Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate has been given the senior reins on a temporary basis, which will include three World Cup qualifiers and a friendly against Spain in November.

When asked in today's press conference if the players are likely to be consulted ahead of a new appointment, Cahill said: "No I don't think we'd be asked. It's to do with The FA.

"It's up to them who they appoint. An English manager would be good but it is whoever is in the best shape. That's not a decision for us to make."

Cahill will bring his tally up to 50 caps if he competes in both upcoming qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia.
