Watford striker Troy Deeney: 'I'll keep working hard for England call-up'

Watford striker Troy Deeney says that he is still hopeful of earning an England call-up.

Watford striker Troy Deeney has not given up hope of earning his first England call-up.

The 27-year-old has performed well this season in the Premier League by scoring nine goals and helping Watford move 11 points clear of relegation.

However, Deeney was overlooked by England manager Roy Hodgson for friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands.

"I have to be careful about what I say, but I'm just going to do my job and hopefully Mr Hodgson will give me a knock and I'll be the first one there," Deeney told Sky Sports' Soccer AM. "I'd be the proudest man in the country if I did get the opportunity. I just have to keep doing my job and working away.

"I don't think the England manager chooses his team based on six months, I think you need to do it over a long period. You have to do it over the long haul. We did really well at the start of the season and it's dipped off a little bit now but more goals are coming for myself so I'm happy."

Deeney is also eligible to play for Northern Ireland.
