Rio Ferdinand believes that England will grab a narrow victory over France in their Euro 2012 opener this afternoon.

Rio Ferdinand has backed England to pull off a narrow victory over France in their Euro 2012 opener this afternoon.

Ferdinand was snubbed in controversial circumstances by England manager Roy Hodgson, who opted to take John Terry ahead of the Manchester United man for "football reasons".

Subsequent injuries and call-ups for Phil Jagielka and Martin Kelly led to Hodgson's decision being scrutinised even further, with many speculating that Terry's upcoming court case against Rio's brother Anton was the real reason behind Ferdinand's omission.

However, the 33-year-old is still fully behind the England team and is adamant that they will not lose to the French.

"Let's hope the #ThreeLions do us proud later... #ComeOnEngland ...1-0 england!" he wrote on Twitter.

"1 thing I'm sure of today is we won't get beat, trust me! we will frustrate the French then sucker punch them!!"

Ferdinand has won 81 caps for the national side since making his debut back in 1997.
