Egypt 1-1 New Zealand

Egypt fail to turn possession into victory as New Zealand hold on to claim a draw at Old Trafford.

Egypt spurned a number of chances at Old Trafford this afternoon as they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw from their Olympic encounter against New Zealand this afternoon.

The Egyptians dominated the opening exchanges by enjoying large spells in possession of the ball.

However, it was New Zealand who went on to break the deadlock in the 17th minute. Michael McGlinchey sent over a corner, which was flicked on by Ipswich Town defender Tommy Smith. The ball dropped to Chris Wood, who guided the ball into the net from close range.

Egypt responded positively to falling behind and they eventually levelled up proceedings seven minutes before the break. Mohamed Aboutrika crossed from the right for Mohamed Salah to volley past goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe.

Emad Meteb had a chance to give Egpyt the lead before the break, but he glanced a header from eight yards out wide of the target.

Egypt's first opportunity of the second half also fell to Meteb, but on this occasion his header was parried to safety by O'Keeffe.

The Africans continued to look the more threatening of the two sides as the game progressed. However, the likes of Aboutrika and Meteb were wasteful in front of goal as New Zealand held out for a share of the spoils.

The draw means that both sides have two points from two matches at the Games.
