Ian Holloway questions transfer window merits

Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway questions the benefits of the current transfer window system.

Crystal Palace manager Ian Holloway has questioned the benefits of the transfer window for the majority of Premier League clubs.

Palace were the busiest club in the summer window, adding 15 new players to the squad at Selhurst Park.

However, despite adding five new players on deadline day alone, Holloway has claimed that only the big clubs benefit as other teams become desperate to add players.

"Why on earth do we have a transfer window? The only people who benefit are the big clubs, and Sky Sports," Holloway wrote in his Mirror column.

"The major Premier League players have the finances to put wheels in motion before the rest of us can even think about getting out of neutral gear. It gives them yet another crucial advantage on a playing field that long ago ceased to be level.

"I can't see any reason why they had to change the old transfer system, which enabled clubs to bring in players up until the third Thursday in March. The current arrangements lend themselves to blind panic, with clubs getting increasingly desperate as the deadline approaches."

Palace currently sit in 13th place in the Premier League table.
