Chelsea forward Timo Werner has emerged as a surprise target for fellow Premier League side Newcastle United this summer, according to Christian Falk.

Werner has been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer after failing to live up to expectations since his move from RB Leipzig in 2020.

Chelsea parted with a sum of around £53m to acquire the 26-year-old from the Bundesliga, but during his two-year stay so far, Werner has scored just 23 goals and registered 21 assists in 89 appearances across all competitions for the West London outfit.

The Germany international has been linked with a return to Leipzig this summer, but well-respected journalist Falk has suggested that Newcastle have also joined the race.

Typically responding to whether European transfer rumours are 'true' or 'false', Falk tweeted from his official Twitter account on Tuesday: "TRUE✅ Newcastle @NUFC is interested in @TimoWerner @ChelseaFC."

The player himself has not ruled out a move away from Chelsea this summer, with one eye on regular game time ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar later this year, but manager Thomas Tuchel has since suggested that the forward needs to "earn his game time".

Tuchel has looked to revamp his forward line at Chelsea this summer, bringing in Raheem Sterling from Manchester City so far, whilst missing out on the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha to Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are also looking to strengthen their options in attack ahead of the 2022-23 campaign, and have been linked with several targets, including Werner, after missing out on Hugo Ekitike.
