Luka Modric to issue 'apology' statement

Luka Modric will reportedly issue a statement to reaffirm his commitment to Spurs.

Luka Modric will issue a statement stating his intent to remain with Spurs, according to The Independent.

The Croatian midfielder has been the subject of much controversy over the last week. Chelsea and Man United both expressed interest in signing him, prompting Modric to say that he wanted to play for a Champions League side.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy insisted that Modric was not for sale and angrily accused the Blues of making an illegal public offer for him. Yesterday manager Harry Redknapp admitted that there had been interest from other clubs but insisted that they would have to "prove" why Modric should stay.

The newspaper reports today that Modric will attempt to "take the sting out of the situation" with the statement, in which he will stress that he "does not have his heart set on a move to Chelsea".

It also claims that Levy will now postpone a planned increase on Modric's £45,000-a-week salary until later in the year.
