The Football Association has handed a 10-match suspension to Liverpool striker Luis Suarez for biting Branislav Ivanovic at the weekend.
The Uruguayan international issued a swift apology for his actions that were committed at Anfield on Sunday afternoon when he sunk his teeth into the Chelsea defender's arm.
He also accepted a violent conduct charge that had been issued by the FA, but added that he did not agree that his offence was worthy of more than the mandatory three-game suspension.
However, the governing body disagreed with his opinion and have decided to add an extra seven matches, meaning that he will miss the remainder of the Premier League campaign as well as six matches at the start of the new season.
Suarez has until midday on Friday to appeal against the additional ban.
