Jose Mourinho: 'Steven Gerrard has enough quality to remain in Premier League'

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes that outgoing Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard still has what it takes to succeed in the Premier League.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that he is disappointed to see Steven Gerrard call time on his Premier League career, insisting that the Liverpool skipper can still succeed at the highest level.

The 34-year-old is due to link up with MLS outfit Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer after bringing to an end his 17-year spell at Anfield.

Gerrard struck the post during last night's 1-1 League Cup draw between the two sides, and Mourinho made a tongue-in-cheek remark to BBC Sport afterwards, claiming that he would attempt to land the midfielder when his current contract expires.

Asked if he would make a bid to sign the Englishman, he said: "Or get him on loan."

The Blues boss added: "I'm not happy he leaves. I would love the Premier League to keep always the best players. I think he has more than enough quality to play in the Premier League. In spite [of the fact] he's my opponent, I feel sorry that he's leaving."

Raheem Sterling's second-half strike cancelled Eden Hazard's opener in last night's semi-final first-leg tie, with the return match to be played at Stamford Bridge next week.
