Chelsea forward Alvaro Morata says that his first season at Stamford Bridge was "a disaster", with the player also being left out of Spain's World Cup squad.

Chelsea forward Alvaro Morata has admitted that he considered leaving Stamford Bridge during the summer after a 'disastrous' first season.

The Blues paid a reported £60m to sign Morata from Real Madrid, but the attacker netted just 12 times from 31 appearances in the Premier League.

Morata was also left out of Spain's squad for the World Cup, and the player has acknowledged that he contemplated returning to his homeland or Italy before the start of the new season.

At a press conference, the 25-year-old told reporters: "I thought about playing again in Spain or Italy. Of course I thought it would have been happy, but you cannot always escape from reality.

"It was a disaster last year, I did not know where I was, I was not happy. I signed for Chelsea to be there (World Cup in Russia) and I was not, although that ultimately made me motivated."

Morata has started in each of Chelsea's four top-flight fixtures under new head coach Maurizio Sarri, scoring one goal.
