Wigan boss Roberto Martinez rues his side's poor start to their match against Chelsea as they go down 2-0 at the DW Stadium.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has rued his side's poor start to their match against Chelsea as they went down 2-0 at the DW Stadium.

Branislav Ivanovic and Frank Lampard scored inside the first 10 minutes to condemn the Latics to a defeat in their first game of the season.

"We started really softly. There was a lack of intensity and we started in a pre-season type of manner and if you do that in this league you will get punished," Martinez told BBC Sport.

"But with the manner in which we reacted, I couldn't be happier. It was a big test, not just in the technical ability of our team but in terms of our character and we showed a tremendous side."

Next up for Wigan is a trip to Southampton on Saturday.
