England are forced to replace Chelsea defender Gary Cahill with Newcastle United's Steven Taylor for their World Cup qualifiers.

England have called up Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor to the squad following the withdrawal of Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill.

The Football Association have confirmed that Cahill has pulled out of the squad for this Friday's World Cup qualifier against San Marino due to injury.

The FA released a statement, which said: "Cahill was assessed by England medical staff on Monday and will not be able to take part in the match, but will be reassessed later in the week with a view to the second of England's two qualifiers, against Montenegro on Tuesday."

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand also pulled out of the squad yesterday after receiving a lifeline from manager Roy Hodgson last week.
