Paul Elliott believes that Roman Abramovich was correct to sack Roberto Di Matteo.

Former Chelsea defender Paul Elliott has stated his belief that Roman Abramovich was right to sack Roberto Di Matteo as the club's manager.

Di Matteo, 42, was removed from his position earlier today despite guiding the Blues to the Champions League and FA Cup last season.

However, Elliott feels that recent results meant that Di Matteo had to go.

"Results and performances haven't been to the level of a club of this magnitude," Elliott told BBC Sport. "Abramovich has always been good for Chelsea and will continue to be."

Rafael Benitez is currently the favourite to replace Di Matteo.
