Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois appeal fails

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will serve a one-match suspension following confirmation that Chelsea's appeal against his red card was unsuccessful.

Chelsea have lost their appeal against the red card that goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois received during the weekend's 2-2 draw with Swansea City.

The Belgian was dismissed by referee Michael Oliver during the second half of the contest at Stamford Bridge for bringing down Bafetimbi Gomis as the Swansea striker bore down on goal.

It was confirmed yesterday that the Blues had appealed the decision in the hope that it would be overturned, which would allow Courtois to play in this Sunday's clash away at Manchester City.

However, the Football Association has revealed this afternoon that it has rejected Chelsea's plea and as a result, the 23-year-old, who has been banned for one match, will have to sit out the encounter at the Etihad Stadium.

Summer signing Asmir Begovic is expected to deputise between the posts in Courtois's absence.
