Manchester City vs. Chelsea past FA Cup meetings

Ahead of Saturday's FA Cup semi-final between Manchester City and Chelsea, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the previous meetings between the two clubs in the world's oldest domestic cup competition.

FA Cup holders and seven-time winners Manchester City do battle with eight-time victors Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening, with both clubs seeking to secure their place in this year's final.

The Citizens make the trip to the capital following a heartbreaking defeat to Real Madrid on penalties in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday night, ending their dreams of winning an unprecedented double-treble.

Chelsea, meanwhile, put Everton to the sword 6-0 in the Premier League on Monday, extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to eight matches since losing 1-0 after extra time to Liverpool in the EFL Cup final at Wembley in February.

There have been plenty of enthralling encounters between these two teams over the years, and ahead of this weekend's semi-final showdown, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the previous FA Cup meetings between the two clubs.

Chelsea wins: 3

Man City and Chelsea will meet for the ninth time in the world's oldest domestic cup competition this weekend, and the former boast the better head-to-head record as they have won five of their eight FA Cup encounters with the West Londoners.

Just over 109 years have passed since these two teams first butted heads in the FA Cup third round back in February 1915 when 32,000 supporters at Hyde Road watched Chelsea claim a slender 1-0 away victory over Man City. Bob Thomson scored late on to help Chelsea progress, but they went on to lose 3-0 against Sheffield United in the final.

Man City then came out on top in their next five FA Cup meetings with Chelsea, starting off with a 2-0 home victory in the fourth round of the 1947-48 competition courtesy of goals from Billy Linacre and George Smith.

The Citizens faced Chelsea five times in all tournaments during the 1970-71 campaign and although they failed to win both league meetings and either leg of a European Cup Winners' Cup tie, they did beat the West Londoners 3-0 in the FA Cup fourth round; Colin Bell starred for City with a brace at Stamford Bridge.

Forty-two years later, Man City and Chelsea locked horns at Wembley for a semi-final showdown in 2013. Goals from Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero helped the Citizens win 2-1 and reach their second final in three years, but Roberto Mancini's men suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic in the showpiece event.

Under the tutelage of Manuel Pellegrini, Man City beat Chelsea again in the FA Cup just 10 months later, this time in the fifth round thanks to goals either side of half time from Stevan Jovetic and Nasri. However, Chelsea got their revenge in emphatic fashion in 2016, 101 years on from their first FA Cup victory over the Citizens.

Guus Hiddink named a strong Chelsea side that thumped a much-changed City outfit 5-1 at Stamford Bridge, with Diego Costa and Eden Hazard among the scorers to help the hosts progress to the quarter-finals. In 2021, Hakim Ziyech scored the only goal in a 1-0 semi-final win for Thomas Tuchel's side, six weeks before they came out on top against the Citizens by the same scoreline in the Champions League final.

However, Pep Guardiola's Man City have not lost any of their last eight encounters with Chelsea in all competitions since that heartbreaking defeat in Istanbul, and cruised to a comfortable 4-0 victory in their most recent FA Cup clash in the third round last season. Riyad Mahrez scored twice for the Citizens, who went on to beat rivals Manchester United in the final en route to completing a historic treble.
