Charlie Nicholas backs Roy Keane to become new Celtic manager

Charlie Nicholas backs Roy Keane to become Celtic manager.

Charlie Nicholas has claimed that Roy Keane should be given the job as new Celtic manager.

The Scottish giants will be appointing a new boss in the summer when Ronny Deila steps down.

Neil Lennon, who spent four years in charge of Celtic before leaving in 2014, has admitted that he is interested in returning to the club, while David Moyes has also been touted as a contender.

Nicholas, who spent eight years playing for Celtic across two spells, believes that former Manchester United captain Keane would be a good choice.

"I would like Roy Keane to get it because I think he would sort a lot of people out," Nicholas told Sky Sports News. "He would clear the decks. I am not saying he would be the greatest tactician, but I think he would bring a different drive and a different energy to the club.

"He would be the type I'd be looking at to take on people, give him the responsibility and let him get on with it. He would be my ideal choice. I think there are others out there, but I am not convinced the owner or chief executive will step aside and say this is the way it has got to be because there's an issue with the club's budget."

Keane currently works as assistant head coach for the Republic of Ireland, but has had managerial spells at Sunderland and Ipswich Town.
