Cardiff to announce new manager next week

Cardiff's chief exec says the club is likely to announce a new manager next week.

Cardiff City are poised to appoint a new manager next week, the club announced today.

Chief exec Gethin Jenkins said he has been interviewing potential candidates following the dismissal of Dave Jones last month.

"In line with the stature of the club today, it's no surprise that the level of interest in the position has been high," he said. "We will now take the next steps towards appointing a manager who we feel can take our club forward. Our work will continue this week, from which a full announcement will be made on an appointment, which could be next week."

Among the candidates are ex-Newcastle boss Chris Hughton and former Barnsley manager Mark Robins.

Elsewhere, this afternoon Watford issued a statement denying that Malky Mackay had been sought for the road. "Watford Football Club wishes to confirm that it has not received an official approach for the services of manager Malky Mackay," it read. "The Hornets boss signed a new deal earlier this year, therefore continues to be under contract at Vicarage Road."

Jones was fired by Cardiff after they lost out to Reading in the semis of the Championship playoffs.
