Arjen Robben suffers ankle injury

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben is sent home from Holland duty early after suffering an ankle injury.

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben has been sent home early from international duty after suffering an ankle last weekend.

Robben picked up a niggling ankle problem in the warm-up before the Netherlands' 2-2 draw with Japan on Saturday, but still captained the side and got on the scoresheet in Belgium.

Holland coach Louis van Gaal has revealed that he did not want to take a risk with Robben, deciding that he was not fit to take part in a clash with World Cup contenders Colombia in Amsterdam tonight.

He told the Algemeen Dagblad: "There is still fluid in his ankle.

"This game has come too soon but I think he can play in the upcoming weekend."

The 29-year-old now faces a battle to be fit for Bayern's return to Bundesliga action on Saturday night, which comes with a trip to arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund.
