Five scorers of multiple goals in one match

Following Cristiano Ronaldo's five-goal haul, Sports Mole looks at five other players that have scored a large number of goals in one match.

For the first time in his career yesterday afternoon, Cristiano Ronaldo scored five goals in one match as a rampant Real Madrid hammered a sorry Granada side 9-1 at the Bernabeu.

Yet, there are a number of players that can boast a better goal return in 90 minutes than the Portuguese talisman.

Here, Sports Mole has taken a look at five footballers that bagged an unfathomable number of goals in a single outing.

Ted MacDougall (nine goals) - Bournemouth 11-0 Margate, 1971

During his career, MacDougall played for the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and West Ham United, but it's at Bournemouth where he is regarded to be a legend.

That is thanks in part to his outing in the FA Cup against Margate, during which he scored nine goals - five in the first half and four after the restart.

Unsurprisingly, it's a haul that remains an FA Cup record.

Archie Thompson (13 goals) - Australia 31-0 American Samoa, 2001

A whole host of records tumbled in this encounter, including the most goals scored by an individual in an international fixture.

Archie Thompson is the man that holds it. He completed his hat-trick in the 27th minute, yet there was somehow still time for him to add a further five goals before the break. Five more followed in the second half to take his tally up to 13.

Former Walsall striker David Zdrilic also weighed in with eight goals of his own, while Con Boutsianis notched a hat-trick.

Eulogio Martinez (seven goals) - Barcelona 8-1 Atletico Madrid, 1957

During his six years as a Barcelona player, Martinez won two Spanish titles and the Spanish Cup on a further two occaisons.

However, the Paraguayan is best remembered for the seven goals that he scored in a Copa del Rey tie against Atletico Madrid.

The club's new forward addition, Evaristo, commented after watching Martinez's exploits: "With a striker like that, I have no idea why you have signed me, perhaps you need somebody to sweep the dressing room."

Afonso Alves (seven goals) - Heerenveen 9-0 Heracles, 2007

Middlesbrough fans will scarcely believe that this is the same player that flopped following his club-record move to the Premier League in 2008.

The Brazilian striker bagged a hat-trick within the opening 18 minutes for Heerenveen, but then didn't find the net again until the 68th minute. Then, in goal-laden period, he added three more in the space of nine minutes to humiliate visiting Heracles.

Such performances convinced Boro to part with £12.75m to sign the forward, who struggled to replicate such form in England.

Jimmy McGrory (eight goals) - Celtic 9-0 Dunfermline, 1928

No player comes close to having scored as many goals for Celtic as the frighteningly prolific McGrory.

In total, the centre-forward hammered in 470 goals in just 445 for the Bhoys. Second on the all-time list is Bobby Lennox on 273.

Eight of McGrory's goals came in one outing against a hapless Dunfermline, which to this day remains a Scottish Premiership record.
