The Atletico fightback gained momentum five minutes later when Stefan Savic headed home from close range and Herrera's late intervention ensured the points were shared.

Sarri admitted he is side had let two points slip in their Champions League opener.

He told his post-match press conference: "It's a pity we drew the match because we had the game in our hand for a long time. We need to improve in our aggressiveness and attention.

"The feeling is that it is not a question of form, because if you are passive, you are passive even marking yourself.

"Things were on display that we implement every day in training, but conceding these goals too is punishing."

Atletico manager Diego Simeone said his side had reaped the rewards of persistence.

"We faced a very strong side with experienced players. We never gave up," the Argentine said. "If we continue to grow like this, this game will have been very important for us in our development."

Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci admitted his side were on the back foot from the start of the game.

He told the Juventus website: "There was a lot of pressure by Atletico in the first half. When we started moving the ball around, we created hazards and scored. But I am sorry to have conceded two goals.

"We need to pay more attention because we had a great game. We cannot concede so many goals."

Savic felt his side had controlled the match.

"It was a great game. I think we played very well, we controlled the match and didn't deserve to lose," the Montenegrin said. "It wasn't easy to come back from 2-0 down, but we always kept believing. I'm very happy to have scored my first Champions League goal."
