Paul Lambert expects Christian Benteke response

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert backs Christian Benteke to respond from last weekend's penalty miss when they face West Ham United later today.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has insisted that Christian Benteke will not suffer any long-term loss in confidence following his penalty miss against Everton last weekend.

Benteke failed to convert from the spot as Villa slipped to their fourth home defeat of the season at the hands of Everton, with his effort saved by Tim Howard.

Lambert believes that Villa fans will see no signs of that disappointment from Benteke this weekend, backing the Belgian international to put things right against West Ham United.

He told The Mirror: "I think the great strikers are really humble, they don't need to be flamboyant. I've not come across many flamboyant ones that have been successful. They were all humble.

"I think Christian has that mentality too and I don't think Christian's confidence will be lacking. It won't affect him. I think by his high standards he will be disappointed but you can't be too analytical. He just needs to forget it.

"I'm pretty sure he will score on Saturday if he gets the chance. He's missed a couple of chances but he will come back and score. I have no worries about that. It's the first time he has missed a penalty. It is not often he doesn't score."

The 23-year-old has found the target five times for Villa in all competitions this season, but is without a Premier League goal since September following a spell on the sidelines.
