Aston Villa defender Joleon Lescott apologises to the club's fans for a "lack of commitment" during their 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool.

Aston Villa defender Joleon Lescott has apologised to the club's fans for the team's "lack of commitment" against Liverpool this afternoon.

Villa fell to their heaviest home league defeat in 81 years as Liverpool ran out 6-0 winners at Villa Park to leave Remi Garde's side eight points from safety with just 12 games of the season remaining.

Lescott acknowledged that neither he nor the team were good enough on the day, and took to Twitter to apologise for the performance.

"I'm not one for tweeting after games whether it's a good, bad or indifferent result but I would like to apologise for the performance today, personally and collectively," he wrote in a Twitter post.

"Liverpool are and were better than us today but that doesn't excuse mine and the teams lack of commitment for the 90 minutes. Again apologies to all the fans."

Villa's next match sees them take on Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on February 27.
