Arsenal are reportedly ahead of Newcastle United in the race to sign Lille forward Jonathan David during the summer transfer window.
Having netted 29 goals for Lille since the start of last season, David is being tipped to move to a bigger club for the start of 2022-23.
Newcastle have been heavily linked with an approach for the Canada international and could move for the frontman if they retain their Premier League status.
However, according to Sky Deutschland reporter Florian Plettenburg, the Magpies have not been in contact, nor will they possess the carrot of Champions League football which David desires.
On Twitter, Plettenberg said: "Update Jonathan David: The 22 y/o striker wants to leave Lille in summer. No release clause.
"Sources expect a price tag around €45-€55m. His new club should play Champions League next season. No contact with NUFC so far. Too expensive for the Bundesliga."
Although Arsenal only occupy sixth position in the Premier League standings, the Gunners are only two points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester United with three games in hand.
Mikel Arteta will also move for at least one new striker at the next opportunity, with David seemingly possessing the perfect profile for a switch to the Emirates Stadium.
