Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits that he is sorry to see Wigan Athletic relegated from the Premier League as defeat by the Gunners condemns them to the Championship.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that he is sad to see Wigan Athletic relegated from the Premier League following their 4-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

The FA Cup winners had their drop to the Championship confirmed as a brace from Lukas Podolski along with strikes from Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey sealed the win for the Gunners.

Wenger told Sky Sports News: "You want to congratulate Wigan and you feel sorry for them, because with the quality of football they play it is sad that they go down.

"Wigan are a good footballing side with intelligent players and it is difficult to understand, but that is the harsh truth of the game."

Arsenal are fourth in the Premier League following their victory and are one point ahead of rivals Tottenham Hotspur going into the final day of the season.
