Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen faces extended time on sidelines

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger reveals that Thomas Vermaelen will face a longer spell on the sidelines than originally expected.

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has suffered a setback in his recovery from ankle surgery.

The 25-year-old was originally ruled out for a month after undergoing surgery recently. However, boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the centre-back will face a longer spell on the sidelines.

"He will be a fraction longer than expected," talkSPORT quotes Wenger as saying.

"He will not be straight back after the international break. One or two weeks later and we still have to count one month for him."

Meanwhile, midfielder Jack Wilshere's return has also been put back after surgery. He is not expected to play for the Gunners until the New Year.
