Emmanuel Petit: Mauricio Pochettino could become 'Arsene Wenger of Tottenham'

Petit: Poch could become 'Wenger of Spurs'

Emmanuel Petit insists that Mauricio Pochettino could become "the Arsene Wenger of Spurs" if he misses out on the Real Madrid and Manchester United jobs this summer.

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has claimed that Mauricio Pochettino 'could become the Arsene Wenger of Tottenham Hotspur' if he does not leave the club this summer.

Pochettino has spent five seasons at Tottenham, guiding the club to top-three Premier League finishes in three of those and remaining on course to do likewise this time around.

Spurs have yet to win any silverware during the Argentine's spell in North London, however, and they recently crashed out of both domestic cup competitions in the space of a few days.

Petit believes that ending his trophy hoodoo is crucial for Pochettino, who has been linked with the Real Madrid and Manchester United jobs of late.

"A lot of questions have been asked about Mauricio Pochettino's future," he told Paddy Power. "For everything he has achieved at Spurs, he needs to win the title or some major silverware - they need something to reward the work he's done.

"If nothing happens in that regard by the end of the season, it will be very difficult to motivate the same group of players. It could be end of something - maybe that's the manager leaving the club or several new players coming into the squad.

"I'm a big fan of Pochettino - the way he manages and the way his teams play - and he could be the Arsene Wenger of Spurs. But if he's thinking about a new challenge, he knows the rumours about Real Madrid and Man United and that one day he may end managing a club that size.

"If he wins something this season, however, maybe that will be the turning point for him."

Tottenham welcome bitter rivals Arsenal to Wembley Stadium this weekend on the back of successive league losses.
