Dixon: 'Wenger can't fix Arsenal issues'

Former Arsenal full-back Lee Dixon claims that manager Arsene Wenger is incapable of solving the club's problems.

Former Arsenal full-back Lee Dixon has expressed his belief that Arsene Wenger is not the man to solve the club's problems.

Arsenal's title hopes already look to be hanging by a thread this season after their 3-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City on Sunday left them sixth in the Premier League table and 12 points adrift of Pep Guardiola's leaders.

Dixon labelled the Gunners' performance at the Etihad Stadium as "disastrous" and believes that Wenger will be unable to fix their issues and turn them back into title challengers on a regular basis.

"I think Arsenal's problems are unfixable by Arsene. He's created an environment that doesn't know what they're doing without the ball. For me, it's simple. They can beat anybody on their day going forward, they can lose to anybody on their day defensively. That summed it up on the weekend against City," he told BBC Radio 5 live.

"The [Alexandre] Lacazette thing is a different issue. Why he's not playing him I don't know. You play [Alexis] Sanchez up front, who is a chaser of the ball. If he loses it he will chase. So if you know you've got him doing that then you've got to back him up with people doing it behind him. And he didn't have that. He hasn't got that because they don't know how to do it on a regular basis.

"They are not a pressing side, they do it now and again. They did it against Chelsea, really well in the cup final. You think, 'ah wow, they're back'. Then they go and perform like they did against Watford. And then they try and press Manchester City, one of the best passing teams in the league - how is that allowed to happen? If you're not a pressing side, you have to press for months and years at a time in order to get it right. It was disastrous against City."

Arsenal have already lost four Premier League games this season - twice as many as seventh-placed Burnley.
