Arsene Wenger: Mathieu Debuchy "devastated" by injury setback

Arsene Wenger says that defender Mathieu Debuchy is "devastated" by his latest injury setback, coming 16 minutes into his first Arsenal appearance in 12 months.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that the injury sustained by Mathieu Debuchy against Bournemouth was 'severe', but says it is too early to put a timescale on his return to action.

The 31-year-old was brought in for his first Gunners appearance in 12 months during Sunday's 3-1 win at the Emirates Stadium, only to be forced off 16 minutes into the match.

Debuchy, who has made a total of 22 appearances for Arsenal since joining from Newcastle United in 2014, must now wait until Tuesday before the full extent of the damage is known.

"I have to speak to medical people, but you can only assess it really after 48 hours," Wenger told reporters. "You have to let it bleed and after, usually they have an MRI scan 48 hours later to see how big the damage is.

"When I picked the squad, I imagined that something could happen to Debuchy because he's had many setbacks. He is devastated. he is such a great guy and puts such a commitment into his daily preparation.

"He stared very well and was sharp. He did it on a back-heel pass that is quite dangerous for the hamstring."

Debuchy spent last season on loan with Ligue 1 side Bordeaux, where he was also plagued by hamstring troubles which restricted him to nine league outings.
