Dame Judi Dench: 'I was turned into a battered, mangy old cat'

Dame Judi Dench bemoans her costuming in the widely-derided Cats movie.

Dame Judi Dench has bemoaned her part in the movie Cats, accusing producers of making her into "a great big orange bruiser".

The big-screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical featured an array of top stars, including Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift and Jennifer Hudson, but received almost universal derision from critics and flopped at the box office.

In recent months the film has gained a cult ironic appeal, however, with viewers turning to it for light relief during the coronavirus lockdown.

In an in-depth interview with Vogue magazine, Oscar-winning actress Dench admitted that she has yet to see Cats for herself but was left unimpressed with the costuming.

"The cloak I was made to wear!" she said. "Like five foxes fucking on my back. [They made me into] a battered, mangy old cat. A great big orange bruiser. What's that about?"
