99-year-old war hero smashes target after 'Good Morning Britain' appearance

World War II hero Captain Tom Moore achieves his target of raising more than a half a million pounds for the NHS after appearing on Good Morning Britain.

World War II hero Captain Tom Moore has raised more than half a million pounds for the NHS just before he celebrates his 100th birthday.

Moore is aiming to complete 100 laps of his back garden before he reaches the milestone birthday at the end of April, with all money raised going to help the frontline effort in the battle against coronavirus.

The 99-year-old appeared on Good Morning Britain today to raise awareness of his appeal, with host Piers Morgan pledging £10,000 to the cause.

"Captain Tom Moore, thank you for serving your country. I'm so glad that we were able, through the brilliant NHS, to serve you back and keep you going," Morgan told Moore.

"Good luck - I want to get you over the line today. Here's what I'm going to do, Tom, I'm going to put £10,000 of my own money into your fundraising today and I hope that encourages everyone watching at home to do the same.

"Little or small, whatever you can do. Let's get you over the half a million. You've got 10 grand from me."

The fundraising total has since ballooned from £250,000 to more than £565,000 at the time of writing.
