Captain Tom Moore, a 99-year-old World War II veteran, raises more than £1 million for the NHS.

The 99-year-old World War II hero walking laps of his back garden to raise money for the NHS has smashed through the £1 million barrier.

Captain Tom Moore is aiming to walk 100 laps of his garden by the time he reaches his milestone 100th birthday later this month in an effort to raise funds for frontline workers battling the coronavirus outbreak.

The initial target of the fundraiser was a modest £1,000 but after his story was covered by the media, including ITV's Good Morning Britain, the total ballooned significantly and passed the £500,000 mark yesterday.

GMB host Piers Morgan, who donated £10,000 to the cause, told Moore today: "Tom, you are an absolute legend and we are so proud of you for serving your country in World War II and for serving your country again now for what you're doing with your walks. Good luck to you with the walk - and a big birthday coming for you on the 30th, I think we're going to get a lot of birthday cards sent on to you."

Following today's appearance the fundraising total rocketed further, passing the £1 million mark just after 9am.
