Toyah Battersby to get larger role in Coronation Street

Coronation Street producer Ian MacLeod promises more storylines for Georgia Taylor's Toyah Battersby in future.

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod has promised fans that Toyah Battersby will be given more storylines in the future.

Georgia Taylor joined the show as Toyah when the Battersby clan were introduced in 1997 and left six years later after being part of one of the soap's controversial storylines which saw Toyah beaten and raped.

The actress decided to return to the cobbles almost four years ago but has only played a bit-part role since, with her last major storyline coming in 2018.

"She's a fabulous actor and fabulous character, so we're looking to fix that really," MacLeod told a virtual press conference this week, adding that Toyah would have a part to play in sister Leanne's upcoming story that sees baby Oliver start to suffer seizures.

"She's obviously going to be a huge part of [that story]," he said. "Then there's a parallel thread for her and Imran, where they're making some big life decisions of their own, which are thrown into disarray because of what's going on.

"Obviously while everyone else starts to feel shut out from Leanne's world and her private emotional turmoil, Toyah is very much Leanne's rock.

"She's at her side throughout, she's Leanne's staunchest supporter. There'll be a lot more screen time for Georgia and Toyah in the coming months."

Coronation Street continues tomorrow at 7.30pm on ITV.
