Zoe Smith blasts Daley's Twitter abusers

Team GB's Zoe Smith has her say on the abuse that has been aimed at diver Tom Daley via Twitter.

Team GB's Zoe Smith has blasted the individuals that have been abusing diver Tom Daley via Twitter.

Smith, 18, set a new British weightlifting record earlier today, while Daley failed to medal in the men's synchronised 10m platform event.

Daley, also 18, then received a torrent of abuse on the social networking site, suggesting that he had disappointed his father, who died from cancer in May 2011.

"It is ridiculous that people are making the comments that they are on Twitter," said Smith. "For people to be sending things like they are to Tom Daley is awful. No way has he let anyone down by coming fourth at the Olympics.

"To be at an Olympics at 18 is a fantastic achievement and I don't think people realise it. I hope my performance today was two fingers up to those who have been abusing me."

Daley will be in action again when the 10-metre platform singles competition begins on August 10.
