Simon Whitlock crashes out in first round of PDC World Championship

Darren Webster dumps Simon Whitlock out of the PDC World Championship at the first-round stage.

Seventh seed Simon Whitlock has been knocked out of the PDC World Championship in the first round following a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Darren Webster.

Forty-eight-year-old Webster, who is currently ranked at number 34 in the world, started quickly by taking the opening set of the contest with some impressive finishing.

Whitlock did manage to level things up at 1-1, but Webster pulled off a huge upset by winning the next two sets to secure his passage into the next round at the expense of his Australian opponent.

Terry Jenkins had less trouble in his meeting with another Aussie in John Weber as he sealed an impressive 3-1 victory, while Kyle Anderson avenged a previous world finals defeat against Steve Beaton by defeating The Bronzed Adonis by a 3-0 whitewash.

Scott Kirchner made light work of Leeds-born Mark McGrath in the night's preliminary clash, securing a straightforward 4-0 whitewash to set up a meeting with the much-fancied Gary Anderson.

The American then gave the world number four a scare as he took the second set before 2011 runner-up Anderson found his form to close out a 3-1 win and progress to round two.
