Britain's Mark Cavendish has won stage five of the Tour de France.

The Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider finished ahead of Team Sky's Edvald Boasson Hagen as the race went 228km from Cagnes-sur-Mer to Marseille.

The fifth stage remained largely free of controversy until a large crash around 200m from the finish line.

Cannondale's Peter Sagan came in third place in front of Andre Greipel of Lotto-Belisol.

Simon Gerrans of Orica-GreenEDGE will retain the yellow jersey for stage six on Thursday.
