Sir Bradley Wiggins and company qualify for team pursuit final

Sir Bradley Wiggins helps England qualify second fastest for the men's 4,000m team pursuit in Glasgow, where they will face world champions Australia for gold on Thursday.

Sir Bradley Wiggins led England to the final of the 4,000m team pursuit on his return to the track at the Commonwealth Games.

The 2012 Tour de France winner, along with Olympic champion Ed Clancy, Steven Burke and Andy Tennant, qualified second fastest and will face world champions Australia for gold later this afternoon.

The English team produced a strong ride of 3:59.249 to smash the time posted by pacesetters Canada by 15 seconds, and although New Zealand threatened to overtake Wiggins and company in the standings, they faded badly over the last few laps in Glasgow.

Canada and New Zealand will face off in the bronze-medal match prior to a final in which Australia, who went 1.4 seconds faster than England, will start favourites. The race is scheduled for 5.20pm.

Wiggins has won two silvers and a bronze but never a gold at the Commonwealth Games.
