Ireland's final group game of the T20 World Cup against the West Indies has been stopped because of rain in Colombo.

Just five overs of play were possible before the ground staff were forced to come onto the pitch with the covers.

The Windies won the toss and elected to put the Irish into bat. It proved to be a good decision because with the very first ball of the match skipper Will Porterfield was bowled for a diamond duck by Fidel Edwards.

It is the second time in the competition that Porterfield has been dismissed first ball.

That saw Ed Joyce come to the crease and he made 17 runs before play was halted. His partner, Paul Stirling, is unbeaten on 16.

Whoever wins the match will qualify for the Super Eight stage of the competition, while the loser will be knocked out.

No time has been given as to when the players may return to the pitch.
