It was a poor start for the tourists as Hamish Rutherford was caught out after hitting just four runs from 12 deliveries.
Kemar Roach managed to get his second wicket of the morning after sending Tom Latham packing for an lbw after taking just 14 runs from 32 balls.
After a wobbly start, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor managed to make steady progress for New Zealand as they reached a combined 74 runs unbeaten before lunch.
The series currently sits at one Test apiece.
