Angelo Mathews "relieved" by Sri Lanka win over Afghanistan

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews admits that he is "relieved" by his side's four-wicket win over Afghanistan at the World Cup.

Angelo Mathews has admitted that he is "relieved" that his Sri Lanka side beat Afghanistan in their second match at the World Cup.

Sri Lanka clinched their first win at the tournament with a four-wicket victory over the tournament debutants, despite being reduced to 18-3 early on in their innings.

The Lions captain told BBC Sport: "We really need to raise our standards to compete against the top teams. I am feeling relieved at the moment but I thought we came back well.

"It was a see-saw kind of game. They started off well and then we pulled it back in the end. I knew I had to stay out there with Mahela [Jayawardene] to get some kind of stand going."

Sri Lanka, who lost to New Zealand in their opening match, next face Bangladesh on Tuesday.
