Captain Graeme Smith is leaving South Africa's tour of England to attend the birth of his first child.

Captain Graeme Smith has revealed that he is returning to South Africa between his side's Test matches against England.

The 31-year-old's wife is due to give birth to the couple's first child later this week.

Speaking after his side's victory over England this afternoon, the centurion informed reporters that he would be missing training for the next few days in order to head home.

"To score 100 and to win the match we have is kind of surreal," he said. "I'm rushing home to get home for the baby now and I've got to rush to the plane."

Smith will return before next Thursday's second Test at Headingley.
