Melbourne Renegades bowler James Pattinson recorded figures of four for 24 during a destructive four-over spell to inspire his side to a 51-run victory over the Hobart Hurricanes on New Year's Day.

Defending 162/8, the Renegades bowled Hobart out for just 111, with 17 balls of the Hurricanes' innings left unused in the Big Bash clash at Bellerive.

Pattinson was the star of the show with the ball and found himself on a hat-trick in the third over, after removing Shoaib Malik (1) and Owais Shah (0) in successive deliveries.

The Australian paceman, who recorded speeds in excess of 140kmph, also accounted for the dismissals of Ben Laughlin (9) and Ben Hilfenhaus (2).

Pattinson had not been so impressive with the bat, having been clean bowled by Laughlin for golden duck.

However, an unbeaten 50 from Aaron Finch, as well as contributions of 40 and 20 from Michael Hill and Jos Buttler respectively, got Melbourne to a competitive total, which was ultimately made to look a bigger by their display in the field.
