Melbourne Renegades grab the first victory of the Big Bash tournament by defeating their rivals Melbourne Stars by eight wickets in the group clash.

The Melbourne Renegades have clinched victory over their derby rivals the Melbourne Stars by eight wickets in their Big Bash Twenty20 clash.

The Stars, captained by Shane Warne, took to the crease first with Rob Quiney and Luke Wright, who were responsible for getting the side up to an early run-rate but they were dealt a blow in the early stages when Quiney was bowled out by Kevin O'Brien for five in the third over.

Wright managed to rack up 53 runs for the Stars, who won the toss and opted to bat at the Docklands, while David Hussey claimed the second-largest score of 42 as the side finished their innings on 167-5.

The Renegades began their innings strongly with Aaron Finch but they too suffered an early wicket when Daniel Harris was dismissed for three in the fourth over.

Finch emerged as the standout player for the Renegades after racking up an impressive total of 111 runs to give his side the first points of the tournament.

The Renegades managed to chase down the target of 168 with ease as they won the match with 10 balls remaining.
