Pakistan lost two wickets in the morning of the first Test against Australia after opting to bat in Dubai.
Openers Ahmed Shehzad and Mohamed Hafeez were quickly back in the pavilion before Azhar Ali and Younes Khan rebuilt to guide them to 50-2 at lunch.
Hafeez was trapped lbw by Mitchell Johnson for a second-ball duck, while Shezhad was bowled by Peter Siddle for three to leave Pakistan 7-2.
Ali (24 not out) and Khan (14 not out) cautiously went about seeing off the new ball without further damage, and became more comfortable as the session went on, but only hit five boundaries between them.
Spinner Stephen O'Keefe and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh are making their Test debuts for the Baggy Greens.
