New Zealand win ODI opener against Pakistan by 70 runs

New Zealand take a 1-0 lead in the one-day international series against Pakistan by winning the opener by 70 runs in Wellington.

New Zealand have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match one-day international series against Pakistan in Wellington.

The Black Caps, who sealed the Twenty20 series 2-1, had a troubling start with the bat.

Openers Martin Guptill and Tom Latham mustered 25 runs between them before they were both sent packing for 11 runs, but Henry Nicholls improved the total with a knock of 82 off 111 balls.

That was the highest score from New Zealand's innings, and none of the other 10 batsmen went past 50, with Mitchell McClenaghan retiring with an injury on 31 runs.

After posting 280-8 after 50 overs, Pakistan began the reply with Azhar Ali and Ahmed Shehzad, but the first-wicket partnership lasted just 33 runs before the former was taken out for 19.

Babar Azam top-scored with 62 runs off 76 balls, but it was New Zealand's bowlers who impressed as Trent Boult took four wickets, including Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Irfan, both of whom fell for ducks.

Pakistan were bowled all out for 210 in the 47th over.
