New Zealand bowler Doug Bracewell will miss the first Test against England in Dunedin after suffering a freak foot injury.

A freak foot injury has ruled New Zealand bowler Doug Bracewell out of the opening Test with England in Dunedin on Wednesday.

Reports emerged on Monday that the young seamer had sustained the injury at a party hosted at his home in Napier.

It has now been clarified that Bracewell cut his foot on glass in an "unfortunate accident while cleaning up".

Kiwi team manager Mike Sandle said: "Doug is very sorry for any inconvenience he has caused.

"We've told Doug that he needs to take responsibility for what happens around him and that he needs to do all he can to ensure his preparation for international cricket is not compromised."

Bracewell, 22, is expected to be replaced by paceman Ian Butler, who has not played a Test match since October 2004.
