England beat Sri Lanka by 81 runs

England win the first one-day international against Sri Lanka by 81 runs.

England have won the first one-day international against Sri Lanka by 81 runs to give Peter Moores his first victory since returning as coach.

Ian Bell and Gary Ballance scored 50 and 64 respectively, while Chris Jordan was unbeaten on 38 as England finished on 247-6 at The Oval.

The Sri Lankans couldn't chase the target down and eventually finished on 144, and captain Angelo Mathews lamented his side's performance.

"It was a pretty poor performance from the team," Mathews told Sky Sports News.

"The batters never really got going, so all in all it was a pretty poor effort from the team. Unfortunately it was an off-day for the bowlers and the English team batted pretty well.

"[The rain break] was frustrating but you know, you can't really control the weather."

Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene did emerge with some credit, however, as they posted scores of 33 and 35 respectively.
