Play is abandoned during the final session of the opening day of the first Test with England on 160-4 against New Zealand.

Play has been abandoned at Lord's with 10 overs left to play due to rain with England on 160-4 against New Zealand on the opening day of the first Test.

The hosts had a steady progress to the day after they chose the toss and elected to bat, but Nick Compton fell before lunch leaving England one wicket down on 56 runs after the first session.

Captain Alastair Cook tried to improve the run-rate with Jonathan Trott, but the skipper was caught by BJ Watling from a Trent Boult bowl, clinching 32 runs on day one.

Trott was later caught out by Dean Brownlie, giving Boult his second wicket of the day. While England continued their cautious approach, Ian Bell was the next to fall on 31.

England will resume with Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root at the crease tomorrow.
