England end one-day international series against Sri Lanka with defeat

England lose the seventh and final ODI against Sri Lanka by 87 runs, leaving the Lions to claim the series by a 5-2 scoreline.

England have suffered a 87-run defeat in the seventh and final one-day international against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

The hosts, who had an unassailable 4-2 lead heading into the match, made 302-6 before England were bowled out for 215.

Tillakaratne Dilshan scored 101 off 124 balls during an explosive spell at the crease, while knocks of 28 and 33 from Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara respectively saw the hosts make a solid start at the top of the order.

Angelo Mathews could only make 20 before he was dismissed by Moeen Ali, but Dinesh Chandimal [55 not out] and Thisara Perera [54] punished the England bowlers soon after to give Sri Lanka a total of just over 300.

Ali and Chris Jordan finished with two wickets apiece, while Harry Gurney also got in on the act when he bowled Jayawardene on his final international appearance on home soil.

England's run chase started badly when Ali (three) and Alex Hales (seven) were both dismissed by Dilshan within the first eight overs.

Alastair Cook saw his dismal form with the bat continue with an underwhelming 32 before James Taylor [two] and Eoin Morgan [four] fell to Lakmal and Dilshan respectively to leave the tourists on 78-5.

Joe Root's stoic knock of 80 gave England a glimmer of hope as he was supported out in the middle by Jos Buttler [23] and Chris Woakes [34], but the lower order was eventually cleaned up by the victorious Sri Lankans.
